Summer vacation—a time for late mornings, fun with friends, and finally no school. But let’s be honest: a lot of that free time ends up spent glued to a screen, scrolling endlessly, watching videos, and chatting online. Before you know it, summer’s over, and all you have to show for it is a drained battery and sore thumbs.
This year, let’s flip the script. It’s time for students to reduce phone use and reclaim summer for real-life memories, creativity, and connection. Here's how to do it without feeling bored or missing out:
Write down 10–15 fun things you’ve always wanted to do—without using your phone. Some ideas:
Crossing these off feels way better than finishing another YouTube playlist.
Make it fun! Try going phone-free for just 1–2 hours a day, and increase the time gradually. You can even turn it into a challenge with friends or siblings. Keep a journal of how you felt and what you did instead. You’ll notice better focus, sleep, and even mood.
Old-school doesn’t mean boring. Here are a few ways to pass time without screens:
Bonus: These make great Instagram stories after you're done, not during. 😉
Did you know too much screen time can increase stress, anxiety, and even mess with your sleep? Use your summer to reset your brain:
Read a motivational book or listen to calming music
It’s easy to chat with someone online, but spending real time with people is what builds strong friendships. Host a movie night, plan a potluck picnic, or simply hang out without checking your phones every five minutes. Make eye contact. Laugh together. Be present.
Not all apps are bad! Use your phone to help reduce screen time:
Forest – Stay off your phone and grow a virtual tree 🌱
Digital Wellbeing / Screen Time (iOS) – Track usage and set app limits
Habitica – Gamify your real-life tasks and habits These apps help you stay focused, without completely going offline.
Use your time for something meaningful:
Reducing phone use doesn’t mean you have to give up everything fun. It just means using your phone with purpose—not out of habit. Make this summer one you’ll actually remember—not one you spent watching other people live theirs.
So go out, try new things, meet real people, and most importantly—live your summer fully awake.
