CBSE Circular 2025: Class 10 Basic Maths Students Can Now Take Standard Maths in Class 11

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a significant update through its circular dated 27th May 2025. Starting from the academic year 2025–26, students who studied Basic Mathematics (241) in Class 10 will also be allowed to take Standard Mathematics (041) in Class 11.

This is a big relief for lakhs of CBSE students and their parents, as it gives more academic flexibility and helps students keep their future career options open.

Background – Why Two Levels of Mathematics?

CBSE introduced two levels of Mathematics in Class 10 in 2019:

Type of MathsCodePurpose
Standard Mathematics041For students who want to continue Maths in Class 11 & 12 or in higher education.
Basic Mathematics241For students who do not wish to pursue Maths in higher classes and want a simpler syllabus.

Earlier:

  • Students with Standard Maths (041) in Class 10 could choose Mathematics in Class 11.
  • Students with Basic Maths (241) were restricted to Applied Mathematics in Class 11.
  • During the pandemic years, CBSE provided temporary relaxation allowing Basic Maths students to opt for Standard Maths. Now, in 2025, this relaxation has been made permanent.

Key Points of the CBSE Circular (2025)

  • Students who opted for Basic Maths (241) in Class 10 (session 2024–25) can now pursue Standard Maths (041) in Class 11 (from session 2025–26).
  • Before admission, schools must ensure that the student has the aptitude and ability to handle Standard Maths.
  • Once the subject choice is filled in the LOC (List of Candidates), no changes will be allowed later.
  • This rule will continue until the new scheme of studies under NCF-SE (National Curriculum Framework – School Education) comes into effect.

Why This Decision Matters

  • Flexibility for Students – Many Class 10 students choose Basic Maths thinking it will be easier. Later, they realize they need Standard Maths for higher studies. This circular gives them a second chance.
  • Wider Career Choices – Standard Maths in Class 11 & 12 is essential for:
  1. Engineering (JEE, etc.)
  2. NDA & Defence services
  3. CA, CS, and Commerce streams
  4. Economics, Finance, and Statistics courses
  5. CUET and other competitive exams
  • Reduced Stress on Parents & Students – Earlier, parents were worried that choosing Basic Maths would block career paths. Now, this worry is removed.

Guidance for Students

  • If you are planning to take Science (PCM) or Commerce with Maths, you should choose Standard Maths in Class 11.
  • If you are planning for Arts/Humanities or courses that don’t require Maths, then Applied Maths is still a safe option.
  • Students switching from Basic to Standard Maths must be ready for extra practice, as the difficulty level will be higher.
  • FAQs

Q1. I studied Basic Maths in Class 10. Can I now take Science with Maths in Class 11?
Yes, CBSE has allowed this from the 2025–26 session. But your school will first check if you are capable of handling Standard Maths.

Q2. Will there be any entrance test to shift from Basic to Standard Maths?
The circular says schools must ensure “aptitude and ability.” This may mean schools could conduct tests, interviews, or check your Class 10 performance before approving.

Q3. Can I change my subject later if I regret my choice?
No. Once the subject is filled in LOC (List of Candidates), you cannot change later. So choose carefully.

Q4. Will this rule stay forever?
The circular mentions that this rule will continue until the new curriculum (NCF-SE) is implemented. After that, CBSE may revise the policy.

The CBSE Circular 2025 is a student-friendly reform that ensures no learner is permanently limited by their Class 10 subject choice. Students who initially opted for Basic Maths now have the chance to pursue Standard Maths in Class 11, opening up new opportunities for higher education and careers.
