CBSE Class 12 Grading System: Everything You Need to Know

Introduction

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) follows a unique grading system for Class 12 students to assess their performance fairly. Understanding this grading system is crucial for students, parents, and educators. In this blog, we will break down the CBSE Class 12 grading system, its calculation method, and how it impacts students.

How Does the CBSE Class 12 Grading System Work?

CBSE uses a 9-point relative grading system instead of absolute marks to evaluate student performance. Grades are assigned based on the performance of students in each subject.

Key Features of the CBSE Grading System

  • Relative Grading: The grading system is based on the overall performance of students, ensuring fairness in evaluation.
  • No Fail Marks in Internal Assessments: Students must pass both theory and practical components separately.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): Students can calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) by averaging their grade points from different subjects.
  • No Rank System: CBSE does not assign individual ranks to students to avoid unhealthy competition.

How to Calculate CGPA in CBSE Class 12?

To calculate the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):

  1. Add the grade points of all subjects.
  2. Divide the sum by the total number of subjects.

Example Calculation: If a student has the following grade points: 9, 8, 9, 7, 10

then: CGPA = (9+8+9+7+10) / 5 = 8.6

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage?

To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply the CGPA by 9.5.

Formula: Percentage=CGPA×9.5Percentage = CGPA \times 9.5

Example: If a student's CGPA is 8.6, their percentage will be: 8.6×9.5=81.78.6 \times 9.5 = 81.7%
