Onam Exam 2025: Minimum Mark System and Learning Support for Students

The Kerala government will implement the minimum mark system for written examinations in public schools from Class 5 to Class 9 starting with the Onam Exams this month. Students will now be required to secure at least 30% marks in each subject’s written exam.

If a student fails to achieve the minimum marks, they will be provided with two weeks of special learning support programmes in September. These sessions will be organized with the support of school PTAs and local bodies.

According to Education Minister V. Sivankutty, AEOs and other education officers will monitor the progress and effectiveness of these programmes. Schools have been instructed to publish the Onam Exam results within seven days of reopening after the exams.

For Class 10, the minimum mark system will be implemented from the next academic year.

Special Learning Support for Low-Scoring Students

For students who fail to achieve the minimum mark, the Education Department will organize two weeks of intensive learning support programmes in September 2025. These special classes will focus on addressing learning gaps, providing individual attention, and preparing students for upcoming examinations.

The initiative will be implemented with the active support of:

  • School Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs)
  • Local self-governments
  • Educational officers at various levels

Education Minister V. Sivankutty has stated that Assistant Educational Officers (AEOs) and higher officials will closely monitor the programme to ensure its effectiveness.

Quick Announcement of Results

Schools have been instructed to publish the Onam Exam results within seven days of reopening after the examinations. This will give teachers and parents enough time to identify students in need of additional support and plan the remedial classes accordingly.

Minimum Mark System for Class 10

While this rule is being implemented for Classes 5 to 9 immediately, for Class 10, the minimum mark system will come into effect from the next academic year. This phased approach will give teachers and students enough time to adapt to the new evaluation pattern.

By combining evaluation reform with learning support, the state aims to strengthen academic performance and reduce dropout rates, while making sure no student is left behind.
