In a move that could reshape the future of school education in the state, the Kerala government has officially announced the introduction of a two-shift system in high schools across the state. The decision, effective from the 2025 academic year, aims to address the growing issue of overcrowded classrooms, especially in densely populated districts.
The two-shift model is a time-based division of the school day into two parts:
Morning Shift: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Tentative)
Afternoon Shift: 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM (Tentative)
Instead of all students attending school during a single schedule, they will now be split into different groups, with each attending during one of the two shifts. This will double the utility of school buildings, allowing more students to be accommodated without needing new infrastructure immediately.
The initiative stems from multiple pressing challenges:
Surge in student enrollment post-COVID, as many students return to government and aided schools.
Limited classroom space and aging infrastructure in many high schools.
Teacher and resource shortages in high-demand areas.
A growing need to maintain social distancing and healthy classroom sizes for better focus and hygiene.
By running schools in two shifts, the government hopes to maintain classroom quality and create a stress-free learning environment.
This decision will initially impact select government and aided high schools, particularly in regions where student enrollment has exceeded infrastructure capacity.
If successful, the system could be replicated in more schools or even inspire similar models in other states.
Many experts view this as a progressive solution to Kerala’s space crunch, especially given the increase in student numbers after the state’s education recovery efforts post-pandemic.
Reactions have been mixed. While many teachers support the decision in principle, they are seeking clear guidelines on workload, salary adjustments, and planning time between shifts.
Some parents have welcomed the decision, especially those in urban centers. However, concerns remain about transportation, safety during evening shifts, and schedule conflicts with tuition or extracurriculars.
Pilot phase will start in selected schools in June 2025
Full rollout will depend on feedback, results, and resource availability
A monitoring and grievance cell will be established to address issues
Kerala’s decision to implement a two-shift school system highlights the state’s flexible and student-centered approach to education. While this is not a permanent solution, it provides much-needed breathing space as the state ramps up infrastructure development.
If implemented with care, collaboration, and constant monitoring, this model could evolve into a smart, sustainable educational practice not just for Kerala but for many other regions facing similar challenges.
