📚 Kerala to Overhaul Higher Secondary Curriculum Starting 2025

Education Department Takes Bold Step Toward Modern Learning

The Government of Kerala has announced a complete restructuring of the Higher Secondary (Plus One & Plus Two) curriculum, with the aim of preparing students to face the rapidly changing world. This marks one of the most significant academic reforms in the state since 2015, when the current set of textbooks was introduced.

The curriculum revamp will be spearheaded by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), which plays a central role in designing textbooks and learning methods across Kerala’s school education system.

Why This Curriculum Reform Is Necessary

The last curriculum revision took place nearly a decade ago. Since then, the world has seen unprecedented changes in:

  • 🌐 Technology (AI, automation, coding, robotics)
  • 🌱 Environment (climate change, sustainability goals)
  • 🌍 Society & Culture (globalization, digital citizenship)
  • 📱 Learning Trends (online education, hybrid learning)

To remain relevant and effective, the education system must evolve. The new curriculum aims to:

  • Replace outdated content with contemporary knowledge
  • Encourage 21st-century skills like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration
  • Foster constitutional and civic awareness in students
  • Make education more student-centered, inclusive, and future-oriented

New Topics: Governance, Rights & Duties

In a first, the revised syllabus will include topics like:

  • Powers and responsibilities of the Governor
  • Structure of Indian democracy
  • Citizens’ rights and duties under the Constitution
  • Ethical leadership and civic participation

These topics are intended to promote active citizenship and democratic values among higher secondary students.

What Subjects Are Being Revised?

The SCERT will revise textbooks across a broad range of disciplines:

  • Science & Technology – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science
  • Mathematics – Applied and Pure
  • Commerce – Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics
  • Humanities – History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology
  • Languages – Malayalam, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic
  • Vocational & Skill-Based Courses – IT, Agriculture, Health, Tourism

Each subject will follow a new curriculum framework that aligns with national education policies (like NEP 2020) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

How Will the Revision Process Happen?

The revision process involves:

  • 📑 Expert panels of teachers, academics, and curriculum specialists
  • 👩‍🏫 Workshops and consultations with school teachers and principals
  • 📖 Research on global best practices in secondary education
  • 📝 Trial editions and feedback rounds before final printing

This collaborative process ensures that the new textbooks are practical, modern, and learner-friendly.
